about

I say in this lecture that this Franz Liszt transcription that covers the "Robert le Diable" (or "Robert the Devil" in French) focuses on Liszt's basking in the heyday of production and creation of devilish operas in the 19th century, which includes "Mephistofele" (Mephistophiles), the opera by Arrigo Boito, "The Damnation of Faust", the opera by Hector Berlioz, and "Faust", the opera by Charles Gounod.

Franz Liszt was delving into the macabre himself, as I say, which led to his own diabolical works including "Czardas macabre", the Mephisto Waltzes, and even the "Scherzo and March"

"Robert le Diable" is an opera by Giacomo Meyerbeer, which has a story line and plot that is part "Man of La Mancha" and part "Phantom of the Opera." The characters in the opera--Bertram and Robert--are both on a quest to marry the Queen Isabella. But one of these characters will trick the other, especially during the knight tournament, and force one to break the twig of a certain tree and be condemned. But ultimately, at the end of the opera, the turn of events will cause Robert himself to go to hell and finally, Bertram marries Isabella.
